Some Paris monuments amazing facts for travellers
Signal white now
The basilica has never been restored unlike other Parisian monuments. It is naturally white. This is due to the limestones used for its building that have an auto-cleaning property. When it is raining the stones produce a white material, the cullet, which has the particularity to harden under the combined effect of rain & sunshine.
Between 1872 & 1925 around 10 millions contributors donated for approximatively 40 millions gold francs (80 millions euros). Each donation gave you a part of the basilica following a rate grid. 120 francs gave you an hidden cut stone, 300 francs a stone with 5 letters at the back (not visible) and for 200 more francs you could engrave 2 letters at the front. The richest donators could afford a whole column or a pillar for a modest amount of 1000 to 100 000 francs.
The Sacré-Coeur is the only church in Paris to practice the perpetual eucharistic adoration. The worshippers continuously relay each other day & night to pray in front of the blessed sacrament since 1885. This prayer only stopped one or two times during the bombing alerts of the 2nd World War. If you want to try the experience you can subscribe Here.
